VELTYS advised WorldRugby on the tender process for the Rubgy World cups 2021 (playing in 2022) and 2023 media rights

Veltys has supported World Rugby in its tender process in France for the media rights to to the two upcoming Rugby World Cups

As experts in the design of tenders – thanks to our expertise in auction theory and economic theory – we supported World Rugby throughout the tender process.

During this project, we provided in-depth market analysis based on three streams:

  • a benchmark of the amounts paid for the media rights of similar competitions
  • a statistical and econometric analysis of audiences
  • an estimation of advertising revenues for the different broadcasters.

We were then able to use this market analysis to help World Rugby build the packages and define the media rights process in order to satisfy both their financial and qualitative objectives.

We also wrote the economic notes that justify all the choices made in the attribution procedure, which reinforced the legal certainty of the tender.

The media rights of the two Rugby World Cups have been awarded to TF1, and delivered a strong financial result.

Both competitions will benefit from an unrivalled exposure.

“We are delighted to have worked with World Rugby on the tender for the media rights of their Rugby World Cup competitions. Rugby World Cup 2023 is the most important sports competition of 2023 in France. Participating in the design process of the tender was therefore exciting and very motivating for the whole team!”
